Reflecting on yourself—your experience, your “voice,” your background, your talent or lack of it—is what writing workshops make people do. Then, remembering that conflict is the essence of all dramatic writing, repeat the process by imagining a character whose value, attitudes, etc. would likely put them in opposition to the first character you invented.

The writer controls the reader by directing their attention, and causing the them to think AND feel a certain about way about what they are "seeing" and experiencing. Write a story where the character is completely original.
